Words and Wisdom as a Building Material
The "space of language and of the word" is the 129-letter highlight of the Christian Garden. Here you can read through more than 60 passages of text that deal with the theme of man in nature. These texts also form the unusual "building material" of the installation: The gold-lacquered metal letters arranged in horizontal lines form a light and air-permeable housing that creates spectacular shadows. They were designed and manufactured especially for the construction. The contractor was also so impressed by the unusual building material that they began production even before final approval. It was thanks to their confidence that it was possible to meet the opening date scheduled for spring 2011!
Religion Meets Modernity: the Christian Garden
The "space of language and word", modelled on the cloister of a typical monastery garden, forms the centrepiece of the Christian Garden. Within, modern-designed texts from the Bible are displayed and expanded with quotations from Western philosophy and culture. The texts reflect the relationship of man to nature and address the garden as a symbol of Christian life.
The Christian Garden was commissioned in 2007 and designed by the Berlin landscape architecture practice relais. The Allianz Environmental Foundation promoted and supported the continuation of the idea for the Christian Garden through several colloquia.
The Christian Garden is a landscaped centrepiece of the Gärten der Welt, inviting people of all denominations to playfully rediscover Christianity.
Since its opening in 2011, the Christian Garden has received numerous awards, including: the bronze European Design Award by the European Design Ltd., the bronze designer prize of Turandot Verlag Berlin, a nomination for the German landscape architecture prize from the federation of German landscape architects as well as gold in the category space/architecture from the Deutsche Designer Club e. V.
The Water Feature as Source of Life
The centre of the square-shaped garden is occupied by a water feature symbolising the source of life. The element of water in Christianity is imbued with various functions and meanings. Ritual significance is given to water in baptism; it is also said to have a healing and purifying power.
